# AI eats the world

AI tools on my home screen today

We have a stunning amount of AI power at our disposal right now. At the base of my home screen are all the AI tools du jour. Plus Siri, which is available by voice or with a swipe. I bounce across them all. The tools have replaced the browser as my go-to for any question or investigation. (This can’t ultimately be good for Google. And it is interesting that Microsoft is absent; they had such a quick pivot to AI and now, pfft.)

I’m super excited about all these tools. They are collapsing the old structure of the software industry, the old ways of building software. 3 years ago I used VS Code all the time. We have the tools in abundance now; it is up to us to really figure out how to make a difference.

### Reining in AI

[Microsoft wants to rein in AI](https://www.seattletimes.com/business/microsoft/microsoft-sets-its-own-ai-guardrails-amid-rising-industry-concerns/?ref=techcanbebetter.com) — given Microsoft’s AI struggles, it is hard to not look at this skeptically — “Hey slow down all those innovators so we can catch up”.

In general, I’m in the camp of people looking very skeptically at the recent cries to slow down innovation, [for instance, Anthropic](https://www.threads.com/?xmt=AQG0MLpgqEo9nZpQuvUxFDQYP9ETNLxtY3fuqtAEJYF92znkbn23EtbiVzi9tIW1fppWJOX8&ref=techcanbebetter.com). It certainly smells like regulatory capture and/or a way to shift blame for a company's actions onto the government. If Anthropic wants to slow down and implement greater guardrails, they can do that. And if they think “the public needs to have a stake”, they can gift some of their equity to the public today; they don’t need to wait around.

### AI-assisted devices
